South African artist Ben Nsusha’s “Thunga uThimule” exhibition is currently on display at Museum Africa in Newtown, Johannesburg, from September 25 to December 24. Nsusha, aged 66, is renowned for his expertise in ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, and painting.
The exhibition’s title, “Thunga,” derives from the Zulu word for “to sew” and symbolizes the communal act of sharing traditional beer. Nsusha’s intricate artworks often require years of meticulous labor; for instance, his sculpture “Ancestral Connection” took nearly eight years to complete and features wood, steel, and shredded paper.
With pieces priced between R5,000 and R450,000, Nsusha’s talent has garnered international recognition. He exhibited at the African Art Centre gallery in London in 1987 and was sponsored by Standard Bank to showcase his work at the Grahamstown Arts Festival in 2000.
Reflecting on his artistic journey, Nsusha attributes much of his success to his mother, a skilled basketweaver, whose support and encouragement fueled his passion for art from an early age.
