Renowned artist Ben Nsusha is thrilled to present his largest solo exhibition to date, titled “Thunga uThimule,” at Museum Africa in central Johannesburg. Running until December 24, the exhibition showcases 80 pieces, a significant increase from his usual 10 to 15 artworks displayed at solo exhibitions.
This exhibition is a culmination of my diverse artistic disciplines, including sculpting, print-making, ceramics, and painting,” says Nsusha, expressing his excitement at merging all his specialties for the first time.
One standout piece, “Ancestral Connection,” seamlessly combines all four disciplines into an abstract masterpiece. Nsusha, a seasoned artist with over 40 years of experience, continually pushes his creative boundaries to evolve his artistry.
Innovative techniques, such as incorporating R10 and R50 banknotes into his work, lend unique textures and colors to his pieces, showcasing his penchant for experimentation.
Despite exhibiting internationally in cities like New York and London, Nsusha finds immense satisfaction in receiving recognition in his homeland, South Africa. Reflecting on his journey, he notes the evolving appreciation for art among black communities since the end of apartheid.
Nsusha emphasizes that art is not just decoration but also an investment. With prices ranging from R5,000 to over R100,000, he hopes to shift perceptions about the value of art and plans to establish a training program for aspiring artists in Soweto.
Inspired by his upbringing in rural Mzumbe village, Nsusha aims to nurture the next generation of artists, perpetuating his legacy of creativity and cultural expression.
